Sports Nutrition Talk

There will be a talk on Sports Nutrition by Kate Currie. Kate comes highly recommended by local athlete Steve Hebblethwaite and the Keswick based sports therapist Sue Read. Kate's talk will be on Friday 4th January at 7pm. The cost will be £10 on the night. The venue is the Quaker Meeting House, Keswick, opposite Booths.

Overview:

The human body reacts in a very specific way to sport and exercise. Understanding the body’s reaction to exercise is critical in order to provide the correct nutrients at the correct time so that the body achieves optimal performance and recovery - improving in the most efficient way.

In this seminar, I shall explain the changes that occur to the body both during exercise and after exercise. I shall explain what should be eaten when and why. The seminar will also tie in some important healthy eating principles to support the human body in a more fundamental and broad perspective. My approach will be to give every member of the audience an understanding of life from the human body’s “point-of-view”, with reasons why certain nutritional choices are important; principally to get a strong and lean body that performs optimally in activity, but also and so that each person can, at the same time, begin to reduce their risks of developing many age-related diseases and disorders.

The talk lasts between 1 and 1/12 hours, with time for questions at the end.

The speaker Kate Currie is a Registered Nutritionist, with an Honours Degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from The University of Durham, a Postgraduate Diploma in Nutritional Medicine from The University of Surrey and a Master of Sciences Degree in Nutrition and Food Science from The University of Reading, which was gained with Distinction. Kate currently works as a Nutritionist at the University of Reading.

Online entries for Northern and National XC Championships 2013

A few folk have asked me again for details of online entries for the Northern XC Champs (Knowsley, Sat 26th Jan) and National XC Champs (Sunderland, Sat 23rd Feb).

You need to get your entries in now as closing dates for both are approaching -here are the links again:

Northern XC Champs (details on NOEAA website) -online entries here.
National XC Champs (details on ECCA website) -online entries here.

For the last couple of years the Northern/National have been highlights of the calendar for me and the races this year promise to be equally special events. If you haven't already got an entry in, please do so and then get in touch with Sam Ayers (ladies) or myself (men) -we want as many club members involved as possible.

Really Wild Boar Fell Race 5m 1400' Sat 8th December

Full winter conditions didn't put 102 runners off braving the elements. Knee deep crusty snow made it really hard going and slashed your shins leaving a blood trail down the fell. Everybody ended head over heels at some point. The prizes were excellent and 25 spot prizes included a week for two in the Pyrenees!

Pudsey and Bramley had a clean sweep with all three placings but the hardy Keswick Vets were out too.

Cumbria team for Inter-Counties XC -Birmingham, March 9th 2013

Note from Noel Hakeman of Cumbria AA:

The UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships will be on Saturday 9th March 2013. Counties are invited to enter a squad of 15 athletes, with 9 to run and 6 to score for the team in Senior Men and Senior Women’s races. In the junior categories counties enter up to 12 athletes per event with 8 to run and 4 to score for team competition.

With the change of date of the Cumbria County Champs, from Dec to January (5th), we do not have a lot of time to select and inform runners and get entries to the CAU.

The selection of competitors will again be based on the results of the Cumbria County XC Championships on Jan 5th 2013 at Fitz Park, Keswick. County XC Champs entry form here.

It is a condition that those that enter (not run) the County Championships will get priority in the selection process. (Please ensure you fill in the part of the form "If selected I do/do not wish to represent Cumbria AA at the UK CAU Inter-County
Championships being held...".

If you are not running in the county championships, but would like to b considered for selection it is imperative to let me know before Jan 5th. We are hoping to select the team during the week after the Champs and inform runners during that week. Please ensure you fill in your email address on the entry form.
We would like to but are unlikely to raise a full team in the u17 and u20 events. U20 should note the qualifying date is “under20 on Dec 31st 2013". Note that there is no under11 in the Inter-Counties although under11 can run in the under 13 if they are 11 on the day of the race. Note also that there are no veterans events.

To be selected you must have a county qualification. i.e. lived in Cumbria for 9 months before March 2013 or been born in Cumbria. You can also qualify if your parents lived in Cumbria at the time of birth
or are serving in the forces at a base in Cumbria.

At Birmingham you will need to run in a (Red/Yellow/Green) county vest. We have some of these for sale at £15 and you can collect these at the MLL meetings at Hyndburn or Lancaster on Jan 12th or Feb 9th, or by arrangement.
