Newlands Valley Round - 23rd July 2009

The novelty of a new race attracted 117 runners who were not to be deterred by the unpleasant evening conditions. Despite being the end of July typical Lakeland weather prevailed with low cloud smothering the fells and short, sharp and cold showers that continued to “refresh” the runners throughout the race.

With new records to set it was James Douglas of Border Harriers who set the benchmark with a winning time of 36:02. Russell Maddams of Horwich was in contention up until the Swinside Inn but the Harriers man made use of his descending speed to pull away from Russell who finished second in 37:39. Third place went to Dark Peak’s Phil Winskill (38:09).

The first lady, also establishing a new record, was Jo Zakrzewski of Dumfries Running Club in a time of 44:58. Less than a minute behind was Samantha Ayres of Cumberland Fell Runners in 45:48. Third lady was Keswick’s Club Captain Jo Gillyon in a time of 48:07.

There was success for Keswick AC runners as Iain Boit was 1st MV45, Duncan Overton was 1st MV55 & MV60, Sue Wilkinson was 1st FV45, and Cathy Colam was 1st FV60.

With Club Championship points up for grabs there was no shortage of Keswick runners on the start line. After securing maximum points at the Moorclose 10K Club Captain Steve Hebblethwaite has put himself in a strong position to secure the road Championship after another victory here. Steve finished 6th overall in a time of 39:33.

The ladies road Championship is a much closer affair. With Jo Gillyon first Keswick lady here it means there have been three different winners from the three qualifying races this year and much will depend on the final Championship race, the Derwentwater 10 later in the autumn.

Keswick AC: Steve Hebblethwaite (6th), Iain Boit (11th), Rob Wynne (13th), Nick Ogden (17th), Keith Hill (19th), Duncan Overton (27th), John Nicoll (30th), John Waite (31st), Martin Sluce (35th), Quentin Merritt (38th), Jo Gillyon (42nd), Gary Hadwin (47th), Suzy Grindley (57th), Rob Hankin (58th), Sue Wilkinson (59th), Hayley Hodgson (64th), David Harrison (67th), Mike Beechey (69th), Derek Harrison (71st), Nicola Davison (76th), Trudy Beetham (83rd), Cathy Colam (84th), Karen Sturgess (108th), Ian Addison (110th).

(Full report in Reminder next week).

Snowdon Mountain Race - 18th July 2009

Kenny Stuart's Snowdon record (1:02:29 - 1985) remained intact for another year with the winner of the 34th International Snowdon Race, Andi Jones, finishing in a time of 1:08:15. Andi finished 45 seconds ahead of Ian Holmes and both were representing England.

Also representing England was Keswick's Pippa Jackson who was racing seven days after winning Wasdale (?!?!?!?). Despite Wasdale, Pippa still had an excellent run and was mixing it with the best finishing 45th overall (1:23:10) and second lady behind Katie Ingram. Well run Pip!

Kentmere Horseshoe - Sunday 19th July 2009

Fair weather conditions prevailed for this popular race around the Kentmere valley at the weekend. The course is an excellent horseshoe taking in the summits of Ill Bell, High Street and Kentmere Pike with a long and flat run-in at the end to test weary legs. The route is 12 miles long with 3300 feet of ascent but is deceptively fast despite the climbing involved.

Although many fell-runners were recovering from Wasdale there were still 238 competitors taking part and Craig Roberts of Kendal was the overall victor in 1:34:30. Craig was also the first V40 & V45 beating Jon Deagan of Ambleside by just under a minute. The first lady was Suzanne Budgette of Horwich (1:57:12) who ensured a good day for the veterans as she was also first V40 & V45.

For Keswick, Will Veitch was the first home in 25th (1:48:19) with Craig Smith a couple of minutes behind in 33rd (1:50:56). John Beetham was 45th (1:55:46) and Allan Buckley (211th, 2:34:33) was third V65.

There was only one lady out representing the Club and Sheelagh King ran well to finish 172nd overall (2:21:00).

Wasdale Horseshoe -Saturday 11th July

Early forcasts for the weekend, which had suggested rain might put a damper on the English Championship counter in Wasdale, failed to be correct -It was sunhats rather than waterproofs that were the call of the day as the threatened rain remained over the atlantic to the west, and warm sunshine prevailed for much of the day.

Shortly after 11.00, over 200 runners set off in the sunshine, up the climb to the first checkpoint of Whin Rigg -Rob Jebb (Bingley) was the first man home a little over 3 hours and 45 minutes later, and with a win today Pippa Jackson excelled herself too. After triumph in the British Championship she now claims the English Championship, with four wins from four races at short, medium and long distances. Very well done...just reward for all the hard work this season. Also another Keswick AC ladies team led by Pippa, claimed points again today making it a good day for the club.

Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon 2009, Coniston –5th-6th July

The 31st SLMM took place over the weekend, starting from Coniston and heading over the fells to a mid-camp in the Duddon Valley. Despite a few showers the weather was generally dry with the cloud clear of the tops.
